the grandstand

The Grandstand talks about hiking in a way that is personal, humorous, and humble with the belief that spending time in the wilderness makes us better people. Hikes are more than just mileage and elevation gain—for many of us, they are a means of enduring, and possibly even enjoying, whatever life brings our way.

The Grandstand was named after a rock monolith at the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley.

its time to buy national geographic's 1975 book on the pacific crest trail

The National Geographic Society's 1975 publication, "The Pacific Crest Trail," is a fully illustrated treasure bound in creamy, nubby cloth. The book is replete with images of bearded men in tiny cutoff shorts and smiling flower children eating out of peanut butter jars.

According to the book, only a handful of hikers had covered all 2400 miles of the trail in 1975. As of now, over 2600 people have completed it, and counting. To see what the experience was like in the early days, massage your nostalgia, or enjoy the outfits, this book is available for purchase online for under $10. Do yourself a favor and buy it.
